Common Sense…

By

Here is a real story, just wanted to share –

Coming back from a long day at work in downtown Toronto, I was on the subway Line 2. I felt tired. I was quiet, just observing.

Suddenly, a man yelled at a woman. She was casually scrolling her phone in a foreign language on Instagram at a medium volume. (Yes, it was annoying a bit )
“Do youuuu really think anyone here wants to hear that?” he shouted.
She looked startled and softly said “sorry.”
He added, “Of course you’re sorry now—where’s the common sense?”

That shook me.
But 10 seconds later, irony hit.

Another guy entered onto the train, clearly looking for a seat. He stood near the same man—who had his bag taking up a seat.
He didn’t move it.

I was sitting nearby. I looked at the standing man, then at the bag taking up that seat.
Then I glanced at the guy who had yelled earlier.
We locked eyes. He was observing me.
I froze inside. But at least I made my point even by looking at him in gestures.

My heart started racing—Was he going to lash out at me too?
I looked away.
I said nothing.

That was the moment.
The same person who screamed about “common sense” had the chance to use it himself. He could have made room for an elderly passenger.
But he didn’t.

This city teaches you a lot.
Sometimes, it teaches you to take a stand! or may be not, choose your side; and how common sense isn’t missing—it’s just not so common.
